After a sudden and alarming absence, Leon the Frog is back where he belongs.

Several former and current students gathered in the Social Sciences building at the University of Calgary (U of C) on Thursday to assist in bringing the legendary poem, Leon the Frog, back to life after it was mistakenly wiped away.

“It shows the university’s dedication to student stories and student culture,” said Brit Paris, incoming president for the Grad Students Association. “This was something created by a student years ago that’s really come to have a place in the hearts of many other students.”

Paris is one of the more than 35 volunteers who aided in restoring the poem that once graced the staircase of the Social Sciences building.

She said Leon the Frog was a memorable segment of her years as a student at U of C, which made her eager to help revive him.

“As an alumnus of the faculty of arts, it’s important to me to have a chance to put my name on it and to participate in recreating that legacy,” said Paris.

For nearly 50 years, Leon the Frog was a staple in the Social Sciences building before an anti-graffiti movement unknowingly painted over it.

Many current students and alumni were saddened by the initial news, but were relieved to discover another U of C alumnus, Ian Kinney, had taken the initiative to plan a restoration.

“This poem is part of what it means to go up the stairs here,” said Kinney. “It was part of the history of the Social Sciences building.”
